How does somebody prove their love for somebody? F. Scott Fitzgerald creates Tom and Gatsby’s relationship with Daisy differently in The Great Gatsby, to impose that each character can love the same person but show it differently. Gatsby loved daisy, but his loved seemed a bit extreme. Gatsby was under stress in the hotel while arguing with Tom, and during that he had confessed how far his love for Daisy extended. He had loved Daisy, but while he was blinded by his love, Gatsby, did not see Daisy for who she was now. Gatsby a while back had also had thought it be a good idea for Nick to invite Daisy over so Gatsby could meet her and remind her of the love they once had. Gatsby had waited for five years to meet with Daisy. He thinks during their tea party that maybe Daisy will remember who Gatsby is and was and get back together. In the book Tom says “And what is more, I love Daisy too. Once in awhile I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time.” Pg.(138) Tom even though he was having an affair with her, going out with Myrtle and doing acts which man and woman do when married, he would always stay with Daisy. Tom had thought that if he could prove he was loyal that she would stay with him. When arguing with Gatsby, Tom reminds Daisy of the times when she was genuinely happy with him, and he thinks the past will help her remember that she only loves Tom. He only does this because he knows that it is true that Daisy was happy with Tom and she would not leave him. Daisy and Tom stayed together because they had a happy past. Their marriage being as fragile as it was, kept together because Tom was so eager to show he had loved her more than Gatsby ever would. Tom would keep reassuring her that she would be his only girl, even if he was seeing another
