During Vietnam, would you have been a draft dodger?
The Vietnam War was fought between 1964-1975. It was a war between North and South Vietnam. The United States was fighting to help South Vietnam keep their Democracy. In order to help South Vietnam fight, we needed more soldiers, so there was a draft. A draft is a system that men who are called into war for military service must go fight. Some men chose to dodge the draft, which means a person who avoids going to war at all costs. I would have not been a draft dodger during the Vietnam War because of patriotism and to stop the spread of Communism, keeping Democracy.
During the Vietnam War, I would not be a draft dodger. “In 1966, 1967 and 1968, we near the same hollow claims of victory. For the fact is that the enemy is bolder than ever while we must enlarge our own commitment.” (1968, Eugene McCarthy). If men were not dodging the draft, and if we had more commitment to the war, we would have a greater chance of winning it. So, in my opinion, if more men supported our country, it would be an obvious decision to go to war. Supporting our country is not just being patriotic. “I was in Vietnam when I first heard about the thousands of people protesting the war in the streets of America. I didn’t want to believe it at first- people protesting against us when we were putting our lives on the line for our country. We swore they would pay, the hippies and the draft card burners. They would pay if we ever ran into them.” Basically, if men who are fighting in Vietnam to protect us, we should do the same. They are people fighting for us to stay alive. We shouldn’t be holding a protest because men fighting need our support. If we get called into war, to help protect our country and the people in our country, we must do it. This is showing support for my country when they need
