When faced with an ethical dilemma, a counselor can use the decision making model from the American Counseling Association (ACA). The first step of the model is to identify the problem. Here is where the professional examines the facts such as innuendos, assumptions, or suspicions. In the second step, the counselor applies to the ACA Code of Ethics. The professional will investigate the codes that apply to the dilemma. The third step looks at the dimensions of the situation. To help determine the nature of the dilemma, the professional will explore the autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, and fidelity.
