Alexie, in his piece of writing makes it known any type of books or reading is beneficial to anyone, especially, the Native Americans. Native Americans in the time period were expected to fail and be uneducated, so Alexie made sure every book he could get his hands on he would read. In Prose’ writing she makes is clear that society and children now, are left out on good reading. “Doesn’t our epidemic dumbing-down have undeniable advantages for those institutions whose interests are better served by a population not trained to read too closely or ask too many questions?” In Alexie’s piece he uses pathos and ethos for most of the work. He describes the way he and his family lived on the Spokane Indian Reserve. He creates a sense of sadness and makes the reader feel guilty for him. “ We lived on a combination of irregular paychecks, hope, fear, and government surplus.” However, they still managed to buy books and break the barriers set upon them.
