Evidence based practice is extensive research done in order to incorporate it into practice. Supporting evidence from research helps Occupational Therapists along with other medical field professionals find the best approach to treating patients. While conducting evidence based practice the well-being of the patient is taken into account, creating a positive environment for treatment. This becomes increasingly important due to the fact that the members of the facility and patients should not be harmed in any way. Since evidence based practice has been tested extensively, the research is more reliable. By finding the most efficient ways for treatment, the client and practitioner will both have a positive outcome. There are many ways to …show more content…
After going through several research articles they included 66 for the final review. They were grouped into categories which included social skills, social communication, play and leisure, and restrictive and repetitive behaviors. The results from the articles review suggested that the OT practitioners should consider the use of group based social skills training programs in order to address limitations in social skills with ASD children. Another suggestion is to use PECS, joint attention, and parent mediated strategies to increase social communication in children with ASD. They also recommend trying behavioral techniques like self-management to control repetitive behavior that interferes with occupational performance (Tanner, K., Hand, B. N., O’Toole, G., & Lane, A. AJOT it’s a website in which I would definitely go look for evidence based practice to use. One of the finding of interest was from Kelly Tanner and Brittany N. Hand article was the use of Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). PECS is a system designed to help children match images with words. Only the pictures are shown at first, usually in black and white or abstract art. Then, the patient is expected to verbalize what was seen in those images. Evidence shows that PECS improve social communication in children with ASD. This method has proved helpful through EBP in many patients and remains an effective addition to treatment. Another way of implementing research into future treatments with a focus on Occupational Therapy for children with ASD is the use of sensory integration as noted in Jane Case-Smith and Marian Arbesman’s article. Sensory integration is designed to improve one’s adaptive sensory response to the surrounding environment. This is useful in treatment due to the fact that Occupational Therapy takes a holistic approach in treating patients. Working on patient’s senses will help to better adjust to the setting at hand as a whole, while molding the confidence needed to strive in everyday life. In Lindy L Weaver’s article, physical activities are an important part of preparedness in formal education. Physical activities help to build motor and social skills and are
