Imagine being a citizen living in Salem in 1692 and one day someone makes a false statement of you being a witch or being with the devil. As time goes by people believe the statement without any proof and were put on trial as guilty. if you didn't confess you were a “witch” you would face death. Something similar happen during the McCarthy Era but instead of witches it was communism. Instead of being a citizen of salem you were working of the government. Instead of facing death you would face jail or lose your job. The Crucible by Arthur Miller is an allegory for the red scare in the McCarthy era because there was a lot of blaming without any proof, and unfair trials.

In The Crucible there was a lot of false statements on who was a witch or who saw who with the devil. For example in the book it says ”I saw Sarah Good with the devil, I saw Goody Osburn with the devil!”. This quote is explaining how the girls were making false statements about people being with the devil with no proof. The quote is related to the red scare because McCarthy was blaming people of being communist without any proof.

Another example in the book it states ”the girls unsubstantiated claims ruined lives and led to increased hostility in salem”. What the quote is saying is that after the false statements from the girls the town had lives that got ruined and people got more hostile. The quote relates to the red scare because people in the government got more hostile after McCarthy accused more than 200 people of
