Equality for all. Is a statement that author Harper Lee made widely known in her book through characterization. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, not only do the minorities demand equal rights and equal opportunity, but so do the majority, inequality affects everyone in some way. Maybe one of Lee’s most powerful decisions was to show how unjust the world was and is through a little girl who began to understand the reality; and she began to go up too quickly as the evils of humanity began to show in her small community.

Dolphus Raymond, a very colorful character in the story shows the idea of coexisting and how to compromise for others happiness. Raymond states, “‘I try to give em’. A reason, you see. It helps folks if they can latch onto a reason. When I come to town, which is seldom, if I weave a little and drink out of this sack, [...] that's why he won't change his ways’” (228). In the southern towns there is little to no interracial marriages or relations, but Mr. Dolphus Raymond and his family are an anomaly and its hard for his fellow citizens to understand him. Preserve humanity, be kind and be equal, and if you do not do that already you should read the book and change your ways. Not everyone believes they should be nice to everyone but it truly matters how you treat others.

We are all human beings and we need to give what we would like to receive, author Harper Lee uses very compelling characters like Mr. Dolphus Raymond, Dill and Scout to get that point across and that equality is a must. Without even realizing books teach you very important lessons.
