What a Mocking Bird really is
Many characters in To Kill A Mockingbird are considered mockingbirds. But what does a mockingbird really symbolize? It symbolizes Beauty, Innocence and grace. There are 3 main mockingbirds in the story. These 3 are Atticus Finch, Jem Finch, and Tom Robinson. They are who i chose, because they embody the spirit of the mockingbird in a few ways.
First of all, Atticus is a Mockingbird for quite a few reasons, He not only defended a negro in a time of racism, but he also helped the community as a whole. Atticus is a rather understanding person as he said “You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view, until you climb in their skin and walk around in it”. This is a mockingbird's main aspect as mockingbirds have to be understanding and Atticus is a great example of this. Although Atticus failed in his attempt to bring equality and justice he still fought and that is what a true mockingbird would do.

“Yes suh, I felt right sorry for her” “You felt sorry for her, you felt sorry for her?”. He had compassion for a white woman who was lonely even though she was falsely accusing him and he was frowned upon by most of maycomb just for being black. This level of compassion shows that he is a true mockingbird. Tom also did work for Mayella numerous times and during all those times he never charged a dime. For these reasons tom is very much so a mockingbird.
There are many mockingbird characters in To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus, Jem and Tom Robinson.
