Gluttony is one of the known seven deadly sins in Dante’s Inferno. It refers to the over-indulgence and over –consumption of food and drink. However, it dose pertains to ones greed like wealth. The Sinners within Dante’s inferno cantos VI have to endure the punishments of Circle three but is it the appropriate punishment for this sin. In Dante’s Inferno those condemned within the sin of gluttony are cast into circle three of hell. In canto VI a three headed beast resides protecting circle three by the name of Cerberus. “His eyes are red, his beard is slobbered black, his belly swollen, and he has claws for hands” (Cantos VI; lines 16-18).With a roar described as sounding as loud as thunder. The actual environment in which they reside is depicted as being filled with human waste, organs, heavy falling rain, thick hail, mud, dirty water, a horrible stench, murky air, and being very cold. The environment in which the sinners reside is the exact opposite in which the resided during their glutton’s deeds. Gluttony and greed truly go hand in hand. Gluttony is a type of greed that refers to food consumption. While greed is alludes to materialistic things and wealth. They both subject themselves to fulfilment of one’s desire. It makes me wonder if the punishment these sinners endure is equivalent to the sin. This level hints that being greedy will tear you apart. Which is Cerberus only purpose within this circle because he himself is gluttony. I do not believe that being over-indulged with food and drink should be a ticket to hell. However, greed punishment should be more than being torn apart by Cerberus. There punishment should have them torn apart by Cerberus and torcher. The form of torcher would be to see an image of what they want most but the trick is that someone else that’s not them is enjoying the
