A hero is a person who is willing to give there life and has courage and fortitude. Odysseus shows both of these when he tries to get out of his mid life crisis, his encounter with Circe the witch who turn men into pigs, and he’s survived the cyclops Polyphemus.
The first example is him getting out of his mid life crisis. He is a middle aged man during the book and has his mid life crisis in the beginning of it. also he tried to overcome it by exploring and being curious about the thing around him. Also by trying to avoid the dangers of the sea.
The next example is his encounter with the witch Circe. He meets this witch when he ends up on her island and she turns his men into pigs. He convinced her to turn them back to normal. He stayed on the island for seven years with Circe.

He was able to outsmart Polyphemus by saying his name was “nobody” so when he called for help people would think he’s fine. He also known not to kill him or they would be trapped in the cave. so he blinded him so they could sneak out.
Those are the reasons that Odysseus is a hero. Because after all that he still did not give up. He was determined to get home and it didn't matter who got in his way because he was going to get back to
