Racism. No opportunities. Struggle for acceptance. This is what African Americans had to deal with back in the 1950s. They fought through racism for their opportunities and struggled for acceptance in society. The play A Raisin in the Sun, created by Lorraine Hansberry, explains how a family lives through these tough times for African Americans. Walter Lee Younger, a naive, selfish, and money hungry man, wants to own a business to make a better life for himself. He will try to convince his family to give him the ten thousand dollars they will be receiving for his father's passing. This will be where the story will begin. The dream is to own a liquor store and become a big businessman that can tell his kid about how successful and great he has become. In the story Walter tell Ruth “FIND QUOTE”. This shows that he wants to be something big and better and to show everyone that no matter what race you are you can do anything. They way he uses the money shows how selfish, naive, and money hungry this man is to get what he wants. First, mama buys a house and decides to give Walter the rest, half for him to spend on him, Ruth, and the baby they are expecting and half to put in a savings account for beneatha. Like the selfish man that he is, he uses all the money just for himself and gives it to one of his business partners to pay a part of the store. This shows how little he cares about Beneatha and her dreams and how he wants to do only things for himself and not his family. Second, it shows how money hungry he is because he cares about money so much that he will completely disregard what his family has to say and what they want putting himself over his family. Lastly, it shows how naive he is because the entire plan was a scam on him and one of his other partners. He did not act smart because he just went with what the plan was and did not make sure his friend was not trying to scam him. It showed how inexperienced he was and how he should listen to what his family says instead of doing whatever he
