In the short-story, The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe, irony appears very often. There are many different types of irony including verbal irony, situational irony, dramatic irony, and many more. Verbal irony is when the writer or speaker says one thing but really means something completely different. Situational Irony is when the opposite of what is to be expected to happen occurs. Lastly, dramatic Irony is when the readers know something that the characters do not know.

Verbal irony is when the writer or speaker says one thing, but really means something completely different. The first important example of verbal irony was when the Montresor greets the Fortunado by saying, “My dear Fortunato, you are likely met”. This quote shows suspense in the events leading up to the end of the story. The second example was the quote, “We will go back, your health is precious”; this quote is misleading because the Montresor knows that Fortunato will not turn back. The last verbal irony example is the quote, “For the love of God, Montresor”; this quote shows tragedy when the story finally comes to the Montresor leaving for Fortunado to die. Verbal irony can be tragic, suspenseful, or even misleading.

One example of situational irony is when Montresor threw the torch into where he sealed Fortunato. We expected Fortunado to yell or cough like he did before but this time all we heard was the torch hitting the chain. Another example is how during the story Fortunato thinks that he is going to see amontillado. He keeps expecting to see the Amontillado but he gets killed and never sees it. The last example is how Fortunato is really sick from being in the basement. He keeps coughing and Montessori notices and asks if they want to turn around. Fortunato says no and keeps going even though he gets sick. Those are the examples of situational irony in this
