In Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, humans live in a world without pain, hate, neglect and the other evils of the world. To control the population, soma is used. Soma, calms and sedates but it’s mostly used to distract a person from realizing the truth about their unpleasant world. Alphas are the highest in the caste system and are destined to become the leaders of the world. It is said that exile can become a “potent, even enriching” experience. Bernard Marx, one of our main characters, experiences what it’s like to feel exiled.
Bernard is an outsider. He is excluded from society because of how different he is from all of the Alphas. During Bernards hatchery process, it was rumored alcohol was added to his blood-surrogate, making him short and unattractive unlike all the other alphas. Marriage can bring happiness to a couple and many people like Bernard, want to settle down instead of having casual affairs.
When Bernard and Lenina visit the reservation they are far from London. The reservation is very different from what they are used to. On the way to visiting the reservation, Bernard gets news that he is going to be deported to an island. At the reservation, Lenina and Bernard are given a tour and Bernard finds everything so fascinating. Bernard meets John and they discover the same universal truth. “The words awoke a plaintive echo in Bernard’s mind. Alone, alone… “So am I, he said, on a gush of confidingness. “Terribly alone.” “Are you?” John looked surprised. “I thought that in the other place… I mean, Linda always said that nobody was ever alone there.” “I’m rather different from most people, I suppose.
