Trust is an important trait and guiding factor that all relationships need, whether they are family or friends. In the book Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers, Richie is a seventeen year old boy that goes to fight in the trenches of the Vietnam war. Richie was forced to go to war because he is black and at this time it is challenging for him to get a job or have enough money to go to college. While at war, Richie had made many close friends that he will soon become like family. Richie has real family back in Harlem as well. An alcoholic mother puts Richard in a difficult relationship with his mother and a close almost father like relationship with his younger brother Kenny. In order to be safe, the whole army trusts each other with their life. They need to trust each other because if one of them messes up, it could affect everyone else around them. Not only do they need to trust each other with their lives, they also trust each other with personal secrets. “This chick has been in love with me since before I even knew what love was,” (Myers 168). On this page Monaco was telling the other members of the squad about the love of his life, and how he is going to marry her. Not only did they tell each other everything, they also made a plan to meet up after the war for Monaco's wedding. Richie also shared information about himself as well. Richie talked about his Mom and his brother, Kenny, as well as how good he was at basketball and how much he loved it. But, when he hurt his knee he could not play anymore. This shows that Richie trusts the rest of the group because him not being able to do one of his favorite things, is hard to talk about. In addition, him talking about his family and at home life is very trusting because Richie wouldn't tell that to anyone. In conclusion Richie and the rest of the group are very close and need to trust each other at all
