Why do females choose to disassociate themselves with the word “Feminist”? What is Feminism? Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. Referring to one’s self as a feminist is to support feminism. Many woman such as Maya Angelou, Ellen Page, Malala Yousafzai, Emma Watson, and Beyoncé claim the tittle feminist. Though feminism is supported by both males and females, other individuals don’t believe it’s needed or take it as a joke. Common things that have sprouted from the internet are memes*1. In August of 2013, a women of the name Kelly Martin Broderick was turned into an internet meme. A picture of her holding a sign saying “THIS IS WHAT A FEMINIST LOOKS LIKE” with a caption below her reading “That’s pretty much what I expected”, the image used as a campaign form her university was now being used as both a fat shaming and Anti-feminist meme*2. …show more content…
Some of the most common misconceptions is that they all hate men, they’re against feminine actions, indecisive on views, only females can be feminist, and they only care about females. By definition feminist are incapable of hating men, feminism is the desire to be on the same level of respect that male gender receives, a misandrists is an individual who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against men. Women are able to choose separate rolls from work and home life. Anyone is capable is being a feminist so long as the desire to have both genders seen as equals. Feminist strive to have gender equality and that includes men, men are just as at risk and likely to report a rape or domestic abuse as women and are unfortunately not taken as seriously*4 .
