In “The Turn of the Screw”, foreshadowing is often used. Foreshadowing is an indication or warning of the future. Throughout the whole story, there sections in which a literary device is used by the author to give hints. The reader can have an educational guess in what will happen next in the story. Whether it be the actions of the characters or the scene of the next chapter, we can often guess what will happen next. In addition, the authors show of foreshadowing creates layers throughout the whole novel. There is a action that the reader should not be surprised to discover the action in the end.
“I remember the whole beginning as a succession of flights and drops, a little see-saw of the right throbs and the wrong.” pg 6 From the beginning of chapter one, it is already told of an unhappy ending. This foreshadows the events in how the plot will turn into a downfall after just a short amount of time. From the length of how the story is being told, mess after mess is seems to rise. Readers can hint that even though the novel should be a happy one due to the fact that it is a story about a women taking care of these children, it’s outcome is grief and despair.

An example of this is when she confronts Flora about Miss Jessel. After she confronts Miss Jessel, Flora becomes sick. As a result of this, the reader is prepared to accept that fact something may happen to the other children if the governess confronts any of them.
