The Scary Problems of Foster Care The American foster care system has nearly doubled in the amount of children in the system since the 1980s. Something needs to be done to fix what is wrong. The foster care system should be better for the reason that the children, that have gone through so much to be in the foster care system, deserve a good place to call home and loving people to call a new family. There are many problems with the American foster care system. One of the main problems is that their are not enough families that are willing to take in foster children and keep them, and because of this the children are put into group homes or move home's very often. When foster kids act out they are hurting themselves more than anyone else. Problem children in the foster care system are more likely to move home's more often than non problem children. An example of this situation would be Oneida; her story was told in a section of the book To the End of June: The Intimate Life of American Foster Care by Cris beam. In the book it tells the story of a sixteen-year-old girl named Oneida who was featured on an ad named the “Wednesday’s Child” where a couple whose names were Glenn and Mindy who was looking to adopt saw Oneida. After the classes where took and the paperwork was filled out Oneida was officially part of Glenn and Mindy’s family. The first few weeks were nice, but then things started to go down hill. Oneida started to act out and lie about what she was doing; which later turned into Oneida disappearing for days, and then weeks. All of Oneida’s behavior is because of her background. She had multiple foster homes before Glenn and Mindy, and she had gotten into trouble for partying, drinking, and using marijuana and writing on a wall which had gotten her into legal trouble. So because of Oneida moving homes so often it had caused her to act out and become erratic, and because of this it caused her to be unhappy and without a family. Without the help of the parents the children had no one to help them survive so people figured the only way to help is to put the child on a new home with a new family or to put them into group homes with other children in the same situation as the others. All in all that was the only option and was a rather good one to make. Because without the foster care system many of the children that rely on the system would not be alive today. While it was good for the time it is time for an improvement.
While this is a problem that can be easily ignored and things still move forward without a massive loss of live it will be better off for the children in the system if something was done to make things better for the children so they can have as good of quality of life as any other child not in the
