Roman Art Art in rome is dated back as far as the overthrow of Etruscan kings around 509 bc. Roman art is very influential to many artists and left a great mark on history. As you will learn there are many categories of Roman art. Some may include murals, paintings, furniture and architecture.

Painting in Rome was most influenced by the Etruscans. But the four styles of art came from Pompeii. They city of Pompeii was diminished by Mount Vesuvius. The period after the eruption is said to be the time where the four styles originated. The first focuses on paintings depicting marble and stone. The second style provides an image of a landscape. An example would be a painting of a town or two dimensional room. These paintings were usually painted on walls of small rooms. Next style creates a framed image but instead of being put into a frame the border is painted on. Last but not least is the fourth style which is said to be a mix of all the categories. The major difference is that it mainly focuses on realism.

A bust is a sculpture of a persons shoulders, neck and head. Most commonly made out of marble. One category of bust included a face of a grim man. This showed courage and competitiveness such as if he were in battle. The Bust of Augustus is said to be the most famous. The busts of Caligula is located in Thrace. Caligula was the Tiberius’ step son, also made from marble. Secondly, there were standing statues. Standing statues such as the Augustus of Primaporta, were also created. Augustus of Primaporta is made from plaster and is 204 cm. tall. Like the bust of the grim men it was made to show authority and rule.
