John chapter 10 verses 1-21 talks about a parable that Jesus tells the Pharisees who are there to listen. Jesus uses a couple different words, that actually mean something different than what their real definitions mean, such as sheep and thief. This chapter also uses many different issues to teach the Pharisees. There is only one way to enter the sheep pen that Jesus talks about, but people who are not fit to enter have tried to get in, but if you do not enter the way Jesus wants you to then you will not be saved. What animal comes to mind when you think of a white fluffy animal with four legs? One of the word I studied in John chapter 10:1-21 is sheep. This animal is the most mentioned animal throughout the whole bible, being used by over 500 times. The prominence of sheep in the Bible grows out of two realities. In biblical times sheep were very important to the nomads and for the lives of the Hebrews and other people alike. The second reality is that the word sheep was used to symbolize God’s people. This verse does not really tell us anything special, it just is saying that Laban is gathering sheep for Jacob, but the one thing it does tell us is that the word sheep is not always used in a special way, sometimes the word means what it actually is. In John 10: 1-6 Jesus is talking to the Pharisees about how you should not enter the sheep pen unless given permission and that the sheep follow him because they know his voice, but they will never follow a stranger's voice. This verse in John uses the word sheep to symbolize God’s people, or us.
