David Mamet skillfully weaves the plot of Glengarry Glen Ross to completely lead the reader askew to whom the true villain is. Delving into the greed and the nature of human beings, Glengarry Glen Ross presents the story of four real-estate salesmen who compete to place on a “board”. Although their reasons to place may differ, their common goal remains the same: to not place on the board. The two who do not place on the board are immediately fired by the end of the “sales promotion”.

Roma’s character come off as arrogant, but he has the skills to back up his claims. The quote shows why he deserves the title of an ace. His ruthless and slick tongue are what make him an ace. Furthermore, he knows to make it in the business, playing at the weaknesses of his clients which yields him the most potential and closed sales. Lingk being his current victim. To him, Levene’s success opens a way for him to make more money. While Levene begins his interrogation, Roma emphasizes to Williamson he will take the top leads and the leads Levene has. This reveals his relationship with his “friend”. With this, he reveals his cold-hearted and dangerous personality.
Dave Moss – “Fuck the Machine”? “Fuck the Machine”? What is this. Courtesy class…?” (45) Jealousy shows the worst side of those affected. After Moss’ interrogation, his jealousy of his fellow co-workers are leaked. He shouts “Fuck the Machine” several times and eventually berates Roma for his success. Due to not closing his last few leads, he has become spiteful of others and resorts to manipulating the desperate Levene to become his partner in robbery. He dedicates his time to his work without stop. Even after his interrogation, he still asks for more work as if the incident was non-existent. Although his skill pales in comparison to those on the board, his willingness to keep working hard to reach the board is unfathomable. The main reason the quote: “I want to work today, that’s why I came…” was chosen is to highlight his will to work up to those who have more skill than he does. (59)
John Williamson – “How do you know I made it up?” (67) Although he may come off as incompetent to the four real-estate agents, Williamson truly is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. While listening to Levene’s degrading speech, he asks him the dire question: “How do you know I made it up?” (67) The very question leaves Levene in a state of disarray. Williamson reveals he deceived Roma when he told him he banked the check. Deducing only the thief would have known this information, Williamson figures Levene to be the thief. The quote best exemplifies Williamson’s calculating personality.
