How does the government continue to feed the growing population in Iraq? Iraq mainly consists of desert with two major rivers, the Euphrates and the Tigris, running northwest to southeast, along the rivers are fertile plains. The northern part of the country is mostly mountains; the highest point being 11,847 ft., known locally as Cheekah Dar. Iraq has a small coastline about 36 mi long, along the Persian Gulf. Close to the coast there used to be marshlands, but many were drained in the 1990s. The United Nations estimated there were around 25 million people in Iraq in 2003 and there are about 33 million people in Iraq today. In 11 years the population has increased by 8 million people.

The next step would to take one category males or females, and then compute the percentages that each 5 year age group makes of the total population. For males in the age group 0-4 there are 2.5 million males and 33.42 million people in the total population. To find the percentage you would take 2.5 million divide that by 33.42 million and multiple by 100 to get 7.5%. Repeat this process for all five year age groups. You will then create an age-sex pyramid that looks like this. In order to calculate the NIR of a human population you will need the crude birth rate and crude death rate. First you subtract the crude birth rate from crude death rate then divide by 10. (31.45 – 3.77)/ 10 = 2.76%. To calculate the fertility rate, you will need the sum of the age-specific birth rates for female residents of Iraq during a specified time period multiplied by 5. The total fertility rate is
