In John Carpenter’s 1978 film Halloween, the concept of maternity takes a large toll on the lives of all of the characters. Michael Myers who is the murderer in this film, has had a lack of maternal figures in his life. Although he does have an older sister, when she puts her boyfriend and her physical needs above her brother he realises that she is not the maternal figure he has always wanted. Myers also has a mother but in a later film we find out that both of his parents died when he was young and in a psych ward. Laurie Strode who is the protagonist of this film, holds a lot of the maternal instincts that Michael has always craved. If she would have focused on the child, or gone across the street and co-babysat with her friend, she would have likely made it to the end of the film as well.
