C.S Lewis once said “ Hardships often prepare ordinary people for extraordinary things.” Laurie Halse wrote an amazing novel by the name of Chains. In the novel she writes from the point of view of a small slave girl living during the revolutionary war. Throughout Isabel’s riveting adventure, she faces many obstacles. Like losing her mother, father, and owner. Leaving her and her sister by themselves. Not only that, after her owner’s death Isabel and her little sister,Ruth were to be set free according to her will but never happened. Isabel and Ruth are sold. Lastly, a major struggle for Isabel was when her new owner sold her little sister. All part of life. Some people go through more hardships than others and face more loss and deal with more pain. There is a quote by Peter McWilliams that explains Anderson's point of loss and pain perfectly in my opinion, “ The part of us that feels anger and depression is the same part that feels peace and love.If you refuse to feel the anger and pain of a loss, you will not be able to feel anything else until that area heals. In other words stay out of your own way. Let yourself feel bad if you want to feel bad. Feel joy too. Healing is taking place. Give yourself the gift of healing.”In Isabel’s case, she suffers from major hardships and losses. From losing her family to slavery and diseases, being sold to people who don’t care about them, and losing the only person she has left and brandings. She is extremely brave and does whatever she can to make the best of theses situations. Although, the task proving very hard. These events scar a person for life. And permanent reminders like branded I’s and mental reminders.Throughout the novel, Isabel faces many hardships each with it’s own bad outcome. Whether it be good or bad. She faces many things that we will never have to or be able to understand how she felt. Isabel is left with mental and physical scars. Although I only mentioned three of her hardships, she faced many more along her journey to freedom and liberation. Each breaking her even more and making her fight even
