High school can sometimes be the worst thing ever invented, especially if you are a colored girl attending a colored school. That was why I was glad to take a day off from school and attend a special march. My parents had been talking about it ever since they received a flyer that contained information about a march for voting rights.They called it “the march towards equality.” To be honest, the only reason why I decided to go on this march was because it would allow me to miss some school without getting in trouble with my parents. Back then, I was unaware of all the inequality and unfairness occurring in my very own hometown of Selma. I didn’t even realize that most colored people, including my parents, were unable to vote. However, my parents treated that day like it was a big holiday. They were both dressed in their finest clothes. When we were finally ready to leave my family and I walked to the bus stop. On the bus, my dad explained to me about the situation happening. He told me that about 10 years ago even city buses were segregated. However, thanks to the peaceful marches and protests, a change was made. The city buses were finally desegregated. This is what we are doing right now. We are going to peacefully march from Selma to Montgomery to demand voting equality.

When we arrived at our destination, I was surprised to see so many people there. There must have been thousands of marchers. Suddenly, a man emerged from the crowd and started speaking. I was shocked to find out that the man standing in front of us was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I was surprised and proud to march along with such an important figure whom my parents admired. Dr. King told the crowd that we were going to march from Selma to the state capital of Montgomery. This march will greatly change history and set a milestone to our efforts on racial equality. He also said that this march will be difficult for many of us but we must learn to persevere through the obstacles and challenges that lies ahead of us. Dr. King’s speech raised our spirits to fight peacefully for racial equality. I had to admit, this was the most moving speech I’ve ever heard. After the speech concluded all
