The Harlem Renaissance, lasting from the 1920s to 1930s, was best known as “a cultural movement of international significance that generated an outpouring of African-American art, literature, and music” and was just getting started when Hughes arrived at Colombia University (De Santis 1). It was first called a renaissance by W. E. B. Du bois, another profound African-American writer who inspired Hughes.
