There are many types of conflicts present in Holes, four of which are: man vs man, man vs self, man vs society, and man vs nature. These four examples of conflict help the characters and plot develop. Their resolutions benefit the reader to comprehend the story furthermore. The reason why this is important is that so the reader can know what is happening in the story. The first conflict the reader sees in Holes is when Stanley has difficulty in digging his first hole. This conflict is mainly with himself because he doesn’t have confidence in himself. For example, when Stanley says, ”the shovel wasn’t defective, he was”(27), it was significant because he doesn’t have faith in himself and ends up finishing his hole last, out of his entire …show more content…
This conflict is mainly between Stanley and Zigzag. For example, when Zigzag says to Stanley, “eat my cookie”(because Zero has been digging a part of Stanley's hole every day and that so that he can get Stanley to prove that because Stanley was teaching Zero how to read and write this is significant because that whole ordeal is what makes Zero run away from the camp. The conflict is resolved when Stanley runs away as well so that he can try to find Zero and come back to camp to find the treasure. This conflict is mainly between Sam and Trout Walker. For example, when Hattie sees Sam and Kate kissing and then she tells the townspeople about it, in which they are enraged when they hear about it. It is significant because when Trout Walker hears about it, he gets jealous and also furious, in which he starts a mob of the townspeople to burn down the schoolhouse and then sees in Holes is when Kate Barlow gets bit by a yellow-spotted lizard. This conflict is mainly between Kate and the Walkers. For example, when Linda and Trout forcefully interrogate Kate so that she could tell them where the loot was buried in the dried up lake bed, it is significant because that same cache that was buried will later be found by Stanley and Zero. This conflict is resolved when Kate gets bit by a yellow-spotted lizard in which she dies and the secret to where the cache was buried is lost and then the conflict is further resolved when Stanley and Zero find the cache.
