Homeless Population Reflection

During class we were introduced to a tool called the “Problem Tree”, and I talked to my field instructor on her thoughts of this tool along with the population that I serve. She stated that “it seemed like a great tool to use with the homeless population upon arrival to the shelter when trying to address underlined issues that they do not want to discuss”. In order to make my practice more effective I will ask questions in order to address the client’s needs. In order to become more self-aware I will need to be mindful of my emotions and how I work, to better understand why I do the things I do like talking with my hands and my tone of voice.

The best experience throughout this placement was being able to be honest and open with my field instructor when I did not understand something. In the future I hope to build these bonds with my client. I feel like I have learned a lot about myself during my placement at Housing Families First. The negative connections that I have observed with the homeless population is labeling and the stigma of being homeless.
People in society tend to not want to tolerant this population. I would apply the labeling theory to this population because when using the labeling theory we identify them as homeless bums, or an alcoholic, and a druggie. This labeling technique is reinforced through very powerful applications of the label such as someone’s mother calling their son a bum through repeated applications of the label.
