1. What date did Congress authorize the establishment of a Medical Service? In your own words, explain the importance of this move.
2. July 27, 1775, the Medical Service was established consisting of a Director General, Surgeon General, four surgeons, one apothecary, 20 surgeon’s mates, one clerk and two storekeepers (AMEDD/NCO Enlisted Soldier History, 2017). The importance of this move was that it established the medical corp. Without this move, service members would have suffered gravely on and off the battlefield due to no medical care or lack of. Later it became a permanent part of the U.S. Army after congress realized the critical need for Medical Service.

3. What is General Order #29? What is the significance of this order to you?
General Order #29 established that medical personnel will permanently be part of the Medical Corp. It outlines their duties, pay, and what is expected to become a Hospital Steward. This is significant to me because being part of Logistics, I help support the duties of the Hospital Steward by providing medical supplies and medical equipment. What once was the Hospital Steward’s duties, is now a job duty for a specific MOS. It also means that my specific MOS is a very critical part of the hospital.

The Hospital Steward went from performing duties such as logistics, admin, and food delivery to working alongside the surgeons and working on patients until the surgeons arrived off the battlefield. Some of the significant milestones, include 1775 when the Hospital Stewards were authorized, 1808 their role became more than just caring for the sick, wounded and various other duties in the hospital. 1856, Hospital Steward became a permanent part of the Medical Corp and in 1903 the Steward was known as private or Sergeant (AMEDD/NCO Enlisted Soldier History,
