There are many ways that fossils can be preserved. Most living things are often broken down into the earth after death. It takes a lot of luck, pure twist of fate for a fossil to be preserved. Within saying this still millions of fossils have been found, taking in consideration of how many museums, Palaeontology labs, fossil dealers and private collectors there are.
Fossils can be formed by freezing. Some examples of this technique was when the mammoth and woolly rhinoceros where found in ice from Alaska and Siberia. For this to be able to work the specimens must be continually frozen from death until discovery. Some have even been flash frozen according to discoveries.
