What did they have to overcome to become who they were? He started his career on his first voyage in 1476, when he first realized his interest in exploration. He had to overcome the people who doubted him. He believed the Earth was shaped like a pear and therefore Asia was directly west of Europe. Many physicists and astronomers already proved that the world was round but information did not travel very fast back then. In the end, he had to prevail after getting rejected from many kingdoms for the supplies he needed to sail the ocean towards what he believed was the Indies.
