“It is hoped by Gods assistance, some of the continents of the ocean will be discovered… for the glory of God.” once stated Columbus. (Columbus). Columbus Day has been celebrated in the United States since 1937. October 12, 1942 is the day that is celebrated every year because of the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas. Columbus is a man worthy of honoring because his discovery lead to the founding of the United States of America which is the worlds greatest nation. Although many say that we should not have a day to celebrate just Columbus, he is an important historical figure that helped bring America into being, we should continue celebrating and honoring him. Columbus Day should remain the way it is because of it's deeper meaning and it's importance in school curriculum. We should continue teaching about Columbus Day in schools and everywhere else. It is an important part of history that we should never stop educating people about. Former President Barack Obama said last year on Columbus Day that “More than five centuries ago, one journey changed the trajectory of our world — and today we recognize the spirit that Christopher Columbus's legacy inspired” (Obama). He was a skillful navigator and a brave explorer who was a key player in the founding of the America's. Hearing that one of our leaders of our country supports this day so much encourages me to to side with celebrating this holiday even more. The way schools teach about Columbus can influence students greatly. If teachers talk about Columbus negatively or positively it affects how students will perceive the holiday and it influences the opinion they have on the issue that we face
