Elizabeth Blackwell was and is an inspiration to many people all around the world. She was the first female physician of her time and influenced many women to follow her lead. She showed others how to defy gender stereotypes and follow their dreams. Elizabeth Blackwell was the first women in America to receive a Doctor of Medicine Degree (Sabin). Elizabeth Blackwell accomplished many things such as, being admitted to college, getting a degree, and starting her own business, which inevitably changed the world for the better.
Elizabeth Blackwell was born on February 3, 1821, in Bristol, England. (Brown) Elizabeth's mother Hannah Lane and father Samuel Blackwell had nine children including Elizabeth who was their third child. Elizabeth had four sisters, Emily, Marian, Anna, and Sarah along with four brothers, John, George, Henry, and Samuel. All her siblings were well educated even though they did not attend public schools. Samuel Blackwell did not believe in an education by the church. Since they were unable to attend public schooling, their father hired a private tutor to educate the Blackwell children. He made sure that the tutor taught the girls the same things that the boys were taught, which was very unusual for the time. (Sabin)
