How Did Hunter Gatherers Influence Ancient Civilization

Before civilization, the first humans were known to be hunter gatherers. Their method of obtaining food included gathering things such as berries and hunting animals such as buffalo. Because of this lifestyle, humans followed their food. The hunted animals determined where people would go. This is how humans moved out of Africa, where we all originated. Hunter gatherers were constantly on the move. This was true until farming was discovered. Once people learned that they could raise their own crops and livestock in one area, they began to settle down. Settling down created communities, and later civilizations. Mesopotamia and Egypt, one located by the Tigris and Euphrates and the other along the Nile, were the first civilizations. A couple of the crops first grown by these people were wheat and barley. These crops came to create a new beverage to be enjoyed by all of the new civilized people. As the book describes it, beer was ‘discovered’ rather than ‘invented’ like some other alcoholic beverages. Each example shows influence on history. To this day, these drinks give the same message as they did when they were first introduced. Beer depicts friendship. In early Mesopotamia and Egypt, people drank beer together from straws, which brought people together. Even the discovery of beer gave people a reason to settle down and form civilizations together. Next, wine is a symbol of being upperclass, but also shows equality. Even though it was once one for the elite, it became more common but still a representation of sophistication. Spirits, at least for America, are a symbol of freedom. After being overtaxed by Britain, the American colonies rebelled and gained independence. Overall, I agree with Standage’s arguments for each drink. I never realized how something like a beverage could be so significant to history. Each drink provided something for the society it was born
