I think Imperialism was the main cause that led to the start of WW1. As European countries were becoming more and more powerful at the height of industrialization, a demand and competition for more land and produce was developing, and that created a tension between the most powerful countries in Europe. The imperialism led to strong feelings of nationalism, especially for weaker countries that wanted independence from the big Empires, such as Serbia.
