Addams is known as the mother of social work, who was also a pioneer American activist, sociologist and leader in woman’s suffrage and world peace. The power of the American settlement movement, which developed in London, translated to a broad social engagement of Jane Addams. She combined her work dealing with the settlement movement with Hull House, which was founded in Chicago in 1889 and became the model inspiring the spread of settlement houses all around the world.
