John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK), the 35th president of the United States of America, was one of the nation’s most revered presidents. A Democratic Senator from Massachusetts, JFK was elected president in 1960 at age 43, becoming the youngest president in U.S. history. JFK won against Richard Nixon in a very close race. They were subjects of the first televised debate, where Kennedy demonstrated his understanding of how television can influence an election. His presidency, which lasted from 1961 to 1963 was very effective until being assassinated on November 22, 1963. Kennedy was also the first ever Catholic president. Although he was only in office for three years, John F. Kennedy had a tremendous impact on America through his involvement in civil rights and foreign and domestic affairs. JFK was a man of the people and wanted the country to thrive not because of him, but because of the people. The New Frontier, the title of JFK’s inauguration speech on January 20, 1961, promised that he would work for freedom around the world and he asked Americans to give something of themselves in order to help people around them.
