During the 1600’s exploration was a new and exciting thing to most people. People wanted a better life for their family. This led to trying to find new ways to do things. The Europeans were very interested in exploring. This led them to explore what is now known as Virginia. The Europeans discovered many new things in Virginia. The Europeans sent John Smith to find what is now known as Virginia. Not only did John Smith find Virginia but he found a group of humans that we named Indians. The Indians lived a very different lifestyle than what European’s were accustomed to. They were very cultural and did not do anything without first consulting with their leader, Chief Powhatan. He was responsible for over thirty tribes. One of the main problems with the Europeans and Indians was a significant language barrier. John Smith, a well-known explorer, was appointed to explore Virginia. Smith proved that establishing continuance of a new colony required individual initiative and commitment (John Smith). He saw Virginia as land for many opportunities. He was hoping to find gold, silver, and natural resources. There was an abundance of land, but during the time Smith was there, it was the driest it had ever been. This led to Indians and Europeans trying to feed their own people but there was just now enough for both groups. One day while Smith was out exploring, he was captured by Indians. They help him captive for six to seven weeks and ended in a compromise of two guns and a grindstone and in return Smith would receive the Country of Capahowasic (John Smith). Sir Thomas Gates was appointed to finish the goals of coming to America (Early Jamestown Settlement). He was to find natural resources and send them back to Europe.
