Roman weapons, Armor, and battle strategies The romans contributed a lot to armor, weapons, and battle strategies.
Weapons: Romans were amazing fighters and part of that was because of their weaponry . Romans used the pilum, the pilum was a heavy javelin. The pilum is one of the main roman weapons, used by the roman legionaries,other than the sword.The pilum had origins that dated back to the samnite wars in 343 - 290 (B.C). It was short ranged and had the blade style of a spear, usually 6ft. 7in. long. This weapons had a long thin iron neck and a sharp point. The pilum could pierce through armor. It could be thrown up to 98 feet, but it had an effective range of 50 to 66 feet. It had a two foot shaft which was meant to be able to go through a shield and get to the man behind it. Julius caesar even made his legionnaires use this weapon to stab the faces of of the cavalry in pompeii in the first Roman civil war in the first century BC.

The hasta was 6.5 feet long and the shaft was usually made of ash. The hasta was one of the first main Roman weapon as well as one of the last main Roman weapons they used. At one time all the legendaries used swords to fight.However,during the late empire in the 3rd century, the roman infantry started using the hasta again because it was more effective against the cavalry that rode on
