1881 July 2, James Garfield is shot - the 20th president was shot by Charles Guiteau in Washington, DC and later died from his wounds. Chester Arthur, his Vice President, succeeded him as the 21st president. Garfield was the second president ever to be assassinated.

1882 May 6, Chinese Exclusion act - this act implemented a 10 year moratorium on Chinese labor immigration. This was the first law restricting immigration of a specific ethnic group.

1901 September 6, McKinley is shot - Shortly after McKinley’s second inauguration he was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz in buffalo, NY and died eight days later from his wounds. His death lead to Theodore Roosevelt becoming president.

1902 July 4, American occupation of the Philippines - After the Spanish American War ended, the Philippines fought the US for their independence, but the US won. This was highly controversial for America to occupy another country whom was fighting for its own freedom.
