Texas became a place of refuge for people who felt lost, or abandoned their dreams. It was beginning to fill with men attempting to escape their past, leaving nothing behind but a letter stating where they were going. A group of refugees called the War Party attempted to trigger a revolution in order to free Texas from Mexico. The party members known as War Dogs, were looking to profit off of a free Texas. Despite their appearances they saw themselves as heroes, and revolutionaries. These War dogs consisted of members such as Sam Houston, William Travis and James Bowie. Davey Crockett, who also served in the military, documented the atrocities committed during the war. Crockett, a twenty seven year old from Alabama, along with several hundred volunteers massacred the people of the Tallussahatchee creek village. Crocket missed the closing battle of Horseshoe Bend, by hiring a substitute to finish his tour and returning home. Sam Houston continued his tour of duty leading a successful charge, and being commended by Andrew Jackson. An unsuccessful charge led to an injury that forced Houston to quit the military. He later went on to study law, become district attorney, serve two terms in Congress, and eventually become Governor of Tennessee. Four months after his wedding his life began to fall apart, until he realized that his destiny was in the West. Houston meet James Bowie on his expedition west, who told him about the fortune to made in Texas. Land in Texas was plentiful, cheap, and fertile. The only requirement was to become a Mexican citizen, which Houston eventually became after years of depression and alcoholism.
