After the cotton was picked the seeds had to be removed by hand for every cotton ball, this caused a slow production of cotton. The cotton gin was used to quickly separate the seeds from the cotton ball, it could do the work of several men. The Cotton Gin revolutionized the South by now producing more cotton and a higher demand for laborers in the field. Increased production of more cotton, cotton prices lowered, saved a lot of time and allowed worldly distribution of cotton at reasonable prices. A high demand for laborers in the fields caused illegal slave trade because slave trade was outlawed in the U.S. in 1808
