The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory incident was a traumatic event in 1911 that eventually caused new reforms to be enacted. The event was a factory fire that started on the eighth floor of the Ash building due to a dropped cigarette. The fire did reach the ninth floor. There were only two exits, but one of them was locked at all times because of the owners of the factory and none of the workers had a key. The only precautions that were in place in case of a fire were twelve buckets of water. This was surely not enough to put out the fire which resulted in more deaths along with the lack of exits. In all there were 146 workers who died in the incident with 50 of the victims burning to death. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory led to many reforms.
