How Does Ewell Present Prejudice In To Kill A Mockingbird

In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, prejudice is seen in many ways. One example is when Tom Robinson was accused of rape, he was accused by Mayella Ewell, although he was innocent. The Ewells treat him wrong, they call him “boy” and “nergo” and other names. At the time it was normal to treat black people like that but that did not make it right.

Bob Ewell shows prejudice when he tries to kill Tom Robinson, another way is when he threatens Atticus and his kids showing that he is a coward and afraid that the truth will come out. Finally he goes to Helen’s house Tom Robinson’s wife and threatens her as well. Because of these actions, he did not live long that is why it is important not lie and to the truth even if you are in the wrong. Which he shows he can not own up to the truth, and probably could not own own to it growing up from a child to a man.

Mayella Ewell shows bias and lust when her Father comes around, another way is when she was trying to get with Tom but she does not want her dad to find out about it. Atticus tells Aunt Alexandra, “Alexandra, Calpurnia’s not leaving this house until she wants to. You may think otherwise, but I couldn’t have got along without her all these years” (pg.182). He does not want her to leave because he feels as if Calpurnia is family even though they are not blood family, they are still family. Another way is how prideful she is towards her last name. She feels as if Atticus is too high maintenance to defend a black man. Finally,she tells Atticus that he turned into a “nergo lover” and continues to be mad.
