“I HEAR America singing, the varied carols I hear”, and “America never was America to me”, are quotes from two poems that have multiple facts in common, and various contrasting facts about America. In the two poems “I Hear America Singing” and “Let America be America Again”, there are numerous facts that they have in common. For example both of the poems have literary devices discussed in them. In “I Hear America Singing”, the literary device used in this poem is a metaphor, which is sounds and actions as labor working is compared to music. In “Let America be America Again” the literary device used in this poem is an alliteration, which is “O, let my land be a land where liberty.” The two poems also discuss American dreams, for example in “I Hear America Singing”, it discusses the jobs of americans. “The shoemaker singing as he sits on the bench--the hatter singing as he stands.” In “Let America be America Again” the example of the job of an American it says “I am the worker sold to the machine.” …show more content…
“I Hear America Singing’ took place during the mid 1800’s which was during the immigration industrial revolution, while “Let America be America Again” took place during the mid 1900’s which was during the civil rights. Also the tones of these two poems are totally different. In “I Hear America Singing”, the tone is patriotic, this poem is patriotic because it is talking about the individual workers and liberties make America great. The tone of the poem “Let America be America Again” is frustrating because it discusses the races of humans, the rich, and poor, the nationality of people, and how they feel
