After the Spanish-American War in 1898, which ended Spain’s colonial empire in the Western Hemisphere, the U.S. gained control of Cuba. Three months later, Cuba gained its independence… with certain “catches.” Cuba was FORCED to sell or lease certain parts of its land to the U.S. as part of the Platt Amendment, an eight-step “agreement” signed in 1903 Cuba had to follow in order for the U.S. to end all military operations in the island.

The U.S. built a naval base and in 2002, a detention camp (or should I say harsh military prison?) was built within the base. The naval base, also called GTMO, lies on forty-five square miles.

The main purpose of the camp is to detain suspected terrorists, largely due to the attacks on the World Trade Center
