Miracle Worker: Teaching Hockey I taught my sister Lauren how to play ice hockey. Lauren is thirteen and currently in 8th grade. She does not know much about hockey, in fact, she is a gymnast. Although Lauren goes to public skate every once in awhile, I wanted to teach her more about the sport. I decided Lauren should be my student because she is always telling me how much harder gymnastics is then hockey. I wanted to give her some perspective. Throughout our lesson, Lauren learned a few things from the beginning, to the middle, to the end. In the beginning Lauren was very hesitant with everything she did. She took caution to her speed, even though she was wearing my gear. Lauren fell a lot in the beginning, and it was very difficult to not laugh at her. At first Lauren really struggled with stopping. Sometimes, it became frustrating trying to teach her things when she did not understand the concept. Lauren constantly complained about how hard it was and how much it “hurt” her back. She became more comfortable on the ice. Her stopping improved, so it was time to move on to another skill; crossovers. I never realized how difficult it was to teach someone crossovers until I had to teach them to Lauren. This skill would have taken a lot of time to teach completely. Instead, I taught her to the point of being able to do it without falling. The next skill was shooting. I repeatedly showed her how to do it, but she could not hit the net. Time and time again, she could not do it. As she began to get annoyed, one puck had just barely made it in, so Lauren insisted we move on.
