The purpose of this book was to convey the message about a generation of two types of boys trying to find their way in the world. The author Wes speaks “I guess it's hard sometimes to distinguish between second chances and last chances”. The author Wes uses theme to show how some of his choices made him want to change and to be taught to do better in military school, so the themes are education and the power of change.

The book is meant to show how destinies can determined by a journey, the wrong path or a step down the right one. The first connection is how Wes got influenced with the street life when he adapted to his brother, Tony lifestyle. The second connection is how author Wes getting his life together for the better of his mother , himself and the ones who admire him which is all nurture together by author's diction. The third connection is when both Wess wanted to do best by everybody and themselves but the other wes took the path with the bank robbery which is learned by tony which shows nurture with imagery.
