First Year Reading Experience

The Other Wes Moore, is a novel based on a true story. This novel is about two people with the same name that live in the projects of Baltimore. The different daily routines and hardships that both Wes’ face, is shown throughout the novel. Both grew up without a father and in a troubling community that has either negatively or positively influenced them. The other Wes Moore was greatly influenced by his older brother, and became apart of the drug game. He became a young father and struggled with money and drugs. One violent robbery led him to life in prison. Wes Moore continued to get in trouble at his private school. His constant skipping school and being arrested for graffiti lead his mother to send him to military boarding school. Wes struggled with not being in power and control and he tried running away but failed. Wes started to accept his time that would be spent in the boarding school and grew fond of this new way of power. The power that Wes Moore found within himself, is the ability to achieve and become successful, if you work hard enough for your goal. He graduated as Second lieutenant in the U.S Army. Self sufficiency is being able to take care of yourself. Given Wes Moore’s childhood and the community he was raised in, he showed self sufficiency by prioritizing what he wanted in life. Due to the discipline Wes was taught at military boarding school he became responsible and independent. When going to college, students become independent in their decision making. To succeed and become successful, a college student has to discipline themselves. For example, making sure you get enough sleep and getting all your homework done in
