The nation wide proposal to increase the minimum wage to $15 could significantly reduce the number of workers in the near future. The rise of smart machines and computer technology is threatening to terminate jobs. If the minimum wage is risen, new technology will replace humans and will result in a decrease in available jobs. A rebirth of low-skill, minimum wage jobs would benefit those who are losing these jobs to the rise of smart machines in the work force. Will new technology and computer systems permanently replace humans in the work force? The main argument is whether or not to raise the minimum wage. Low-skill workers would in turn earn more money but employers would have to compensate for the increased wages through use of computing programs and let many workers go in result. As addressed by The Wall Street Journal, “faced with a $15 wage mandate, restaurants have to reduce the cost of service”. Reducing the cost of services would decrease the number of available jobs. Early this year, Panera Bread stated that they are incorporating a self service mobile ordering option. This would lower the need for cashiers. Stopping the increase of minimum wage will make employers less likely to replace people with touch screen technology. The rebirth of low-skilled is necessary to order to keep the economy stable. People who are looking for a low-skilled job that has a higher wage, doesn’t guarantee them a job. If the minimum wage is raised, the competition for jobs will increase due to demand. Many people will be let go from their jobs and many will have their hours cut. Without low-skilled jobs, the unemployment rates will get higher.
