The first and most obvious point of discussion when it comes to outdoor versus indoor tanning is control. Many a person has received a sunburn on a cloudy day erroneously believing the absence of a visual sun signified need for cautious protection. Silly fools!
The only combatant a sun worshiper can have is the use of either an effective sun block or a tanning lotion that will regulate just what effect exposure to the sun may have. Yes, like its artificial counterpart, "users" can regulate the time exposed to ultra violet (UV) rays, thus controlling somewhat of the effect. And, both blocking type and tanning lotions are manufactured with varying levels of effect, the former allowing increased (or decreased) protection while the latter can offer varying levels that enhance the overall tanning process.

Therefore, when seeking greater control of the sunburn process, by all means, go outside and sit for awhile. Indoor tanning in a controlled environment is not only safer, it is more efficient. It can also be far more convenient. It's tough to maintain an outdoor-produced tan during inclement weather, even when living in the tropics. Repeated days of stormy, rainy weather inhibit constant tanning sessions whereas patronizing a commercial tanning salon limits your sessions to that establishment's hours of operation.
